I noticed a bit of coolant on my garage floor a week or two ago. My basic yearly service was due anyways so I decided to take the car into shop so they could find the leak while they had the car in the air. It seemed like a very water-pump like location but figured (hoped) it was a loose hose connection. Well, the shop just called, it is definitely the water-pump. It looks like the engine has to come out early. I could probably wait the extra year and pray but it doesn’t seem worth the risk to me. I’m going to sleep on it and call my mechanic tomorrow to discuss the options.

I have an emergency car fund for a reason. I’m not super excited I have to use it, but I’m happy it is there. Oh well, shit happens.

The pump itself doesn’t seem to be very expensive but I guess accessing it what makes this expensive. At least there’s now a good change to renew the timing belt.

Yeah, the pump isn’t the expensive part. It’s just not accessible with the engine in the car. The belts are due in a year anyways so I’ll just do everything while I’m in there. I’m mostly happy I caught it before something catastrophic happened.

I just had to replace the rear main seal in my Versa. $33 part and $1000 in labor. I performed the labor myself.

Exactly. I had the same thing happen on my VW too. I changed the last timing belt about 15K miles early because the pump was getting noisy. Must be a me issue haha

That’s insane. Glad you were able to do it yourself. I’ve been telling myself I’ll do at least one major service on my car, but I want to pay the shop for the first one. A lift would come in handy haha

I would guess an LS swap would be more expensive. Didn’t Hoover spend 20k on his 911? And that had a kit with all the major components complete. The only major cost of maintenance comes from removing the engine. You would still have to do this to replace the water-pump on the LS.

Well my only thought is that the LS is physically smaller and shorter. Are you sure you’d have to drop it? And a crate motor isn’t that expensive and if you got a used one it would be even less.

There would be a ton of fabrication involved. Then you would have a worthless car with a less interesting engine haha. If anything were to happen, I’d find a used 348 engine out of a junked car

A great place to start is rotating the tires every 5000 miles. You need two jacks to do a proper four-wheel rotation. You get to know our car that way, there’s little to mess up other than not radically over- or undertorquing the lug nuts.

I work on the VW all the time. Did the timing belt once, all the regular maintenance, replaced an oil pan (oops), and a variety of other things. I’ve done radiator swaps and some other 3/5 difficulty things but doing an engine out service is out of my level of comfort. I was really looking forward to doing the basic maintenance this year to explore the car a little and to get over some of the fear of working on a Ferrari. I’ve fixed a few things here and there but haven’t performed any maintenance yet. Oh well, there is always next year haha
